Reasons You Need Water Filtration

Water is something that we all use and drink every single day. We are fortunate enough to have water readily available in our homes, and in Arvada, CO, the water supply is generally of good quality. However, even if you live in an area where you are hooked up to the municipal water supply, you should consider a water filtration system for your home. Here are the reasons why you need water filtration.

Removes Sediments

Sediments such as sand, silt, and other debris are suspended in water and can cause it to have an unpleasant taste. While sediments are not dangerous to your health, they can make water unpleasant to drink. Installing a mechanical filter can remove sediments from your home’s water. Typically, these filters need to be replaced regularly as the sediments build up on them. They are made of fine paper material, metal, fabric, or ceramic.

Removes Pathogens and Other Biological Contaminants

Micro-, ultra-, and nano-filters are types of mechanical filters that are able to remove pathogens such as giardia and cryptosporidium. Giardia is a microscopic parasite that can cause a host of health problems such as diarrhea that can last upwards of six weeks. You can be infected with this parasite if your water gets contaminated with human or animal waste. Cryptosporidium is another type of parasite that causes symptoms similar to giardia, and it is unaffected by chlorine.

In addition to the mechanical filters above, you can take it one step further and install a reverse osmosis system for your drinking water. This type of system uses a semi-permeable membrane that can remove 99% of impurities from the water, including viruses and bacteria.

Removes Chlorine, Lead, and Other Dangerous Contaminants

Chlorine is used by municipal water supply facilities to treat drinking water for bacteria and some types of viruses. While it is effective at removing these contaminants, chlorine can cause your water to smell and taste unpleasant. It can also react with some metals and create very hazardous compounds.

Everyone knows about the dangers of lead in drinking water. It can make its way into your water through old pipes and naturally seep into your water if you are on a private well. Pesticides, fertilizers, and other chemicals can also make it into your water supply due to runoff from agricultural and industrial activities. These contaminants have a long list of negative health impacts, and it is important to keep them out of your home’s water supply.

An activated carbon filter can remove these contaminants and more from your water supply. To get the most out of your carbon filter, it is recommended that you combine it with reverse osmosis or distillation systems. Activate carbon filters have to be changed periodically as they will become “full” and unable to filter out contaminates.
